PACE presents annual community leadership awards
Jeffrey Allen Harris and Bernice Chappell Rutledge were recently honored by People of Action for Community Enrichment. The community organization’s annual awards banquet was held at Greater Peace Missionary Baptist Church Family Life Center in Opelika.
Harris is the 2013 recipient of the Arthur Lee Hill Sr. Community Leadership Award, and Rutledge was the recipient of the PACE Outstanding Member Award.
Each year, PACE presents the Arthur Lee Hill Sr. Community Leadership Award to a citizen who has made significant contributions to the community, who exhibits leadership qualities in the area of community service, who is dedicated to helping others and one who is a positive role model. The award includes honorary membership in PACE for one year. An award is also given to a PACE member who exhibits those same qualities and dedicates himself to the goals of the organization.
Harris, a native of Opelika, earned an Associate in Applied Science in Funeral Service Education from Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service. In September 1991, he established Harris Funeral Home in Opelika, with the help of his family, particularly, his grandfather, the late Clarence Harris Sr. During the years, Harris has sponsored numerous social, community and outreach programs. He has received many service, civic and professional awards.
The community project he is most proud is his Memorial Scholarship Program, which was initiated in 1999. Annually, three students from Auburn, Opelika and Loachapoka are presented awards.
